NEA, DICT urge power co-ops, cable operators, and telcos to collaborate to expedite NBP rollout

Electric cooperatives (ECs) are urged to form partnerships with cable television service providers and telecommunication companies to advance the government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), which aims to “significantly” improve the internet service in the country.

Speaking at the NBP forum at the Grand Meng Seng Hotel in Davao City on February 15, Acting Secretary Eliseo Rio, Jr. of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said the collaboration would not only advance the program, but would also “benefit all parties and stakeholders.”

NEA respects power co-ops’ right to air grievances, urges dialogue to address issues

The National Electrification Administration (NEA) on Friday said it respects the right of the electric cooperatives (ECs) to engage in peaceful protest.

The NEA issued the statement after ECs in different parts of the country took part in a “Black Valentine’s Day” protest on Thursday (February 14) against the Department of Energy (DOE) over what they called “unfair treatment.”

“The NEA respects the right of our electric cooperatives to freely express their sentiments, it being a bulwark of democracy and an essential element against abuse of power,” NEA Administrator Edgardo Masongsong said. Read more

NEA inks deal with Japanese firm to improve power distribution system, serve more communities in Mindanao

April 17, 2018

The National Electrification Administration (NEA) recently entered into a contract with a Japanese firm for the procurement of distribution line materials and brand new boom trucks which will be used to rehabilitate the power distribution system of the six electric cooperatives (ECS) operating in Mindanao.

General trading company, Nishizawa Limited, bested the four other Japanese participants in the bidding for the “Project for Improvement of Equipment for Power Distribution in Bangsamoro Area.”

The National Electrification Administration (NEA) encouraged members of the Northeast Luzon Electric Cooperatives Association, Inc. (Neleca) to remain actively engaged on massive efforts aimed at unifying their communities in aid of rural electrification developments.

Administrator Edgardo Masongsong made the statement citing the demand for all electric cooperatives (ECs) to prove that they are operationally efficient, if only to silence their critics and detractors in the electric power industry.

Aklan electric coop dispels fears of power cuts during Boracay closure

April 19, 2018

The Aklan Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Akelco) has moved to allay the fears of Boracay Island residents amid speculation that the electric service will be scaled down once the world-famous tourist destination undergoes a six-month rehabilitation beginning April 26.

Engr. Alexis Regalado, general manager of Akelco, assured all their member-consumer-owners (MCOs) within the electric cooperative’s coverage area that their operations would continue unhindered despite the projected operating losses during the Boracay closure.

NEA: Mindanao gets bulk of electrification projects this year

A bigger share of electrification projects slated for 2018 will go to unenergized communities of Mindanao to bolster development in the region, state-run National Electrification Administration (NEA) announced Tuesday.

Administrator Edgardo Masongsong said a P1.817-billion budget has been allotted to provide electricity to 1,817 sitios across the country this year. Of this target, majority are located in Mindanao with 705 sitios, followed by Luzon with 560 sitios, and Visayas with 552 sitios.

More households in Tablas Island, Romblon assured of ‘bright’ future

Residents of the six unenergized sitios in the three municipalities of Tablas Island in the province of Romblon will not have to wait for years as electricity may come to them sooner than later.

No less than Administrator Edgardo Masongsong of the state-run National Electrification Administration (NEA) gave the assurance to include these areas to the sitios targeted for energization this year.

Data show there are six sitios that still have no electricity within the franchise area of the Tablas Island Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Tielco). These sitios are found in the municipalities of Odiongan, Looc, and Calatrava.

Mindanao power coops urged to invest in R&D

Mindanao electric cooperatives (ECs) gathered Tuesday (November 14) for a two-day refresher course on the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) held at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City.

Gracing the activity was National Electrification Administration (NEA) chief Edgardo Masongsong, who urged the ECs to invest in research and development to remain competitive and to better address the challenges facing the power industry.

He also recognized the need for the NEA to establish its own research and development unit.

“I am advocating the establishment of a research and development unit in NEA. We need a pool of experts who can generate, consolidate and analyze data on the power industry,” the NEA chief added. Read more

Marawi Power Restoration Rapid Deployment task force launched

The National Electrification Administration (NEA) has joined hands with various electric cooperatives and allied organizations in providing all the necessary assistance to ensure the speedy rehabilitation of the damaged distribution lines and power restoration in areas affected by the five month-long battle between the government troops and the ISIS-linked Maute terrorist group in Marawi City.

Administrator Edgardo Masongsong on Monday (November 13) led the launching ceremony of the Marawi Power Restoration Rapid Deployment (PRRD) Task Force at the Lower Capitol Complex, with Housing Assistant Secretary Felix Castro Jr., field manager of Task Force Bangon Marawi. Read more
